‘... a building made from a combination of existing and modern materials and construction methods, which retains its historic features, roofline and place in Ahuriri’s distinctive landscape...’

Contract period
5 months

Date completed
May 2008

Approximate cost
$9.9m

Scope of work
To construct a near new building housing an atrium, 12 apartments, commercial spaces and a ground floor car park by strategically removing and reusing elements of the building with historic significance and replicating the roofline and exterior of the original woolshed.

Challenges
The site was situated in a highly frequented Ahuriri location, which required constant vigilance and protection from wandering public. Its limited site access and space for sheds or vehicles required robust traffic management to ensure materials and labour could be moved onto and around the site without restricting traffic or public movement.

We utilised an innovative structural floor system that did not require the use of floor beams to allow us to insert another floor inside the maximum height restriction for the site. This involved a rolling platform for casting the in situ slabs and gave us the opportunity to use a rough sawn timber finish to the concrete floor soffit (so these could be exposed in lieu of a ceiling) and in situ concrete shear walls.

Highlights
The end product: a building made from a combination of existing and modern materials and construction methods, which retains its historic features, roofline and place in Ahuriri’s distinctive landscape.
